Bandai NamcoI’m a sucker for charming little creatures. And while I first thought Ni No Kuni 2’s Higgledies looked a bit, well, odd, it didn’t take long for me to warm up to them after seeing them in action.Granted, folks who liked the old system involving familiars might be a bit leery of the role that Higgledies play. Based on what I’ve seen so far, however, Higgledies certainly have some pretty good synergy with the new more action-based battle system of Ni No Kuni 2.Peace pipe dreams: Ni No Kuni 2 Revenant Kingdom review TechnobubbleSo just exactly what are these Higgledies?

Basically, they’re these doodle-looking things that end up serving as a second set of AI partners in addition to your regular party members. They kind remind me of ghost-looking jellybean things and, just like their name, I assume some people will absolutely hate their looks or totally think they’re adorable in a strange kind of way. Acquiring your first HiggledyYou first run into Higgledies while helping out an old lady named Auntie Martha, who gets attacked by a wayward wyvern early in the game. I’m sure Batman and Superman will not be all too pleased at this Martha-hating monster.Once you save Martha, she’ll then notice that you have the ability to see Higgledies and she’ll gift you one of them as a token of her gratitude. You’ll start out with Runcible the Righteous, a Shy Higgledy who looks like some kid drew the Ghostbusters logo and added a red neckerchief for style. Runcible is actually a special type of Higgledy known as a Higgledy Hero. These special Higgledies have the ability to summon lesser Higgledies to the field to assist you either in battle or by triggering field effects.Higgledy Heroes also can use several unique skills, some automatically and others requiring your manual input by pressing a button when you see them congregate in the field and summon a special circle.
Runcible, for example, can automatically use a skill called “Scrap, Scrap,” which raises your attack power, as well as a skill called “There, There,” which restores your HP.When you see Runcible summon a circle with his friends and step on that circle while pressing, say, the X button on the PS4, Runcible and his posse will summon the Higgledy Boom, a large cannon that can inflict nice damage on enemies. Runcible also has a buff called the “Sonic Tonic,” which increases the chance of player characters to emit shockwaves when they are awakened.
Great, I want more!As you further explore Ni No Kuni 2’s vast world, you’ll get the chance to recruit even more Higgledies into your party. Once you get to Cloudcoil Canyon, for example, you will acquire the green wind element Higgledy Wiff-Waff the Wafty, who teaches you the Wind-Whipper spell so you can use prop-leafed clovers to generate strong winds that can carry you to higher places that you normally can’t access. In addition to progressing the story, this is a great way to nab several treasure chests that are hidden about.Wiff-Waff also has a Shy nature and starts out with the same “Scrap, Scrap” ability that Runcible has but also possesses the “Wimpy, Wimpy” ability that lowers your enemy’s attack. Press the X button when Wiff-Waff and his pals conjure a circle and you’ll trigger his Higgledy Heal ability which gradually restores the HP of a character in the circle for a certain amount of time, making it especially handy against tough mobs and bosses. Wiff-Waff’s “Gust Buster,” meanwhile, makes players more resistant to wind attacks when awakened.Cloudcoil Canyon is also where I found my first Higgledy Stone, which is located right after a narrow wooden curved path next to one of the canyons. In case you haven’t been diligent in picking up shinies on the ground, you can pick up the sparkling item right next to the stone and you’ll acquire a Munchy Nut, which is the item required to unlock the stone.
Doing so will let you acquire another green Higgledy Filigree the Flighty, who has a Cowardly nature and also possesses the wind element. His first ability is “Same, Same,” which can potentially summon more Higgledies when Filigree is hit with an attack that’s the same as his element. Filigree also has “Hunker, Hunker” increases an ally’s physical defense.
Pressing the X button when Filigree summons his circle will trigger the Higgledy Fan, which creates a temporary energy field that boosts the resistance of allies to wind attacks. For awakened teammates, Filigree also has Hard Guard, which boosts an ally’s defense.I found my second Higgledy Stone at the Wyvern’s Den, which is pretty hard to miss. This one requires, uh, creamy white stuff — at least that’s the description I got so I gave it one of these Single Creams that I got from a chest on the way to Wyvern’s Den. It’s the chest that’s right before this rock passage that goes down toward the valley. Fresh Milk also came up as one of the options to give but I didn’t get the chance to try it out.Anyway, this Higgledy Stone unlocks Tove the Tenebrous, a Dark element Higgledy with an Outgoing personality. In addition to having the same “Wimpy, Wimpy” ability as Wiff-Waff, Tove also has the “Tick, Tock” ability, which automatically increases the number of Higgledies in battle.
When he summons a circle and you press the X button while standing on it, Tove will use his Higgledy Plunge, which turns up the power of gravity to the max and sends foes crashing down while inflicting damage. This ability actually made the fight against the wyvern boss almost laughably easy and it was over pretty quickly for me. For awakened allies, Tove has the Night Smiter ability, which makes you more resistant to dark attacks. The number of Higgledies you can have in your party is also dependent on how much Higgledy Cost you can accommodate. You start out with four party slots for Higgledies as well as 10 points worth of capacity.Your first batch of Higgledies start out at Level 1 and only require one Higgledy cost point. You can level up your Higgledies, which will raise their parameters such as attack power or feistiness and defense or hardiness. Unlike your main characters, Higgledies, don’t level up from battles but from feeding, which I’ll talk more about later in the article. You also need to pay attention to your Higgeldies’ personalities.
A shy Higgeldy such as Runcible, for example, will need to be balanced out with a more aggressive Higgeldy in the party. Mixing Higgledies who have traits in common also grants special bonuses. So what’s this about cooking Higgledies? To create your own Higgledies, you can cook up a new batch in a cauldron.Seriously.All you need to do is build the Higglery facility, which is where you can level up the little buggers as well.To build the Higglery, you will need to finish the Goldpaw arc and make it to Chapter 4. This will unlock the castle building segment of the game, allowing you to create facilities in your castle town. Before you can get your Higglery going, however, you will need to find someone who can run it, you know, an expert of sorts who is well versed in the ways of the Higgledies. Hmmm, I wonder who fits that description, hmm?Yep, that’s right. It’s Batman and Superman’s “mom,” who you saved from that ornery wyvern early in the game.
Anyway, just use the handy dandy Trip Door feature to warp straight to Auntie Martha’s cottage and recruit the sweet old, lady. Before Auntie Martha joins you, however, you will need to do a favor for her. See, some sticky-fingered Whamster apparently absconded with her prized scrubber, which she needs to clean her Higgledy cauldron. To retrieve the stolen scrubber, you’ll need to track down the ratty little thief by going to the Grotty Grotto just northwest of Auntie Martha’s cottage. There, you’ll meet the furry little rodent and his band of pilferers. These guys are Level 20 but, honestly, they really shouldn’t present much of a challenge for you at this point. Just give them a few good whacks and Auntie Martha’s scrubber is all yours.
By the way, for you completionists out there, the Grotty Grotto is also where you will find the first of 9 Dreamer’s Mazes in the game. Just talk to the mysterious professor Mileniyah, who will be in the watching you in the cave, and she’ll hand you the Dreamer’s Key, which allows you to access the doors to these mazes.Anyway, once you return to Auntie Martha and hand her the scrubber, she will then go with you to Evermore, where you can now assign her to the Higglery. Just for good measure, I also placed Tani and Niall in there since they had a high Higgledy aptitude, which helps improve the Higglery’s performance. As I mentioned earlier, the Higglery allows you to do a few things. One is to feed and level up your little helpers by going to the Nurture Higgledies option. If you’ve been pretty diligent in picking up the shinies you see when you’re out and about, chances are that you have more than enough resources to feed and level up the Higgledies you’ve acquired so far to Level 2.Otherwise, just make sure you build the Everyday General Store and assign the NPC Gerel in there, who automatically joins your kingdom after the Sky Pirate chapter. The store actually stocks up several of the items required by the Higglery to either level up your Higgledies or create new ones. Just keep in mind that they require you to spend some gold.Anyway, just pick the Higgledy you want to level up and feed it the requisite items.
To make things go more efficiently, you’ll want to feed them their favorite items, which is designated by a heart symbol next to the item. You can also increase the EXP you get from feeding them items if you complete the “Higgledy-Rearing for Beginners” option in your research list.To create your own brood of the little critters, just pick the Cook Up Higgledies option. Here, you will have a list of Higgledies that you can try to make such as Fidget the Festive or Tumtum the Terrible. I don’t know who came up with these names but they obviously were having a lot of fun. Higgledies that you have materials for will have their names lit up while those that you need to gather resources for will be grayed out. A good idea is to go for the ones that either have an element you don’t have yet, have a personality that balances or synergizes well with other Higgledies in your party, or simply have skills or abilities that you like. While you can get most of the materials you need from the general store, getting the requisite prisms will require you to scour mining camps, at least early on in the process.
I had a few Clear Prisms when I first unlocked the Higglery, for example, but didn’t have any of the Red, Green or Blue Prisms needed for the other elemental types. One neat tip is that you can press R3 while highlighting a Higgledy in the cooking menu to bring up a list of places where you can find each resource. If you have everything you need, the initial cost to cook up a Higgledy is 1,000 gold but you can lower that by 20 percent if you complete the “Cook Great Higgledies for Less” task in the research list. You can also expand the selection of Higgledies you can choose to make by finishing the various Higgledy Cookbooks from your research list.

These include the My First Higgledy Cookbook and the My Second Higgledy Cookbook, which you can research even when your facility is just at Level 1.One more thing before I forget. Make sure you talk to Auntie Martha from time to time outside the Higglery. Occasionally, she’ll hand over a gift that the Higgledies have for you.Anyway, that’s it for my guide for acquiring, leveling and creating your own Higgledies in Ni No Kuni 2. Now get out there and get higgy wit’ it.Technobubble covers games, gadgets, technology and all things geek.
